First Day at a New Job

Rebecca Bloom, the new full-time sales associate at Target Corporation, was hired about a week ago, and today, Jan. 30, is her first day on the job. As she nervously walked through the automatic doors wearing tan khakis, a red t-shirt and black sneakers, her trainer for the day, Bridget Owens, greeted her.

“Welcome to Target! I’ll help guide you through your first day and how things usually work around here” said Owens. First, both employees went to clock in at 9:00 A.M. and placed their lunches in the refrigerator in the break room. Soon after, they began to walk around the store as Owens showed Bloom places she would eventually be working and introducing her to other employees.

As they made their way around the store, they ended up at the check out registers. “This is going to be our station today, I’m going to show you how to work the cash register, how to interact with customers, and how to troubleshoot as problems that might come up while you are checking out a customer,” said Owens.

As their first customer approached, Owens took the lead to show Bloom how it would go. “Hello! Did you find everything okay today” asked Owens? Owens went on to introduce the customer to Bloom explaining this was her first day and she was in training. She began to scan the items and the customer had a produce item. Owens began to explain to Bloom that for produce items, the item will have to be placed on the scanner to measure its weight, then the item will have to be looked up in the system because it does not have a barcode.

After about thirty minutes of Owens taking the lead, Bloom stepped in. Her first customer approached and everything went smoothly. Bloom was excited that she succeeded on her first try.

Around one o’clock, both employees clocked out for their mid-shift lunch break. As they clocked out and grabbed their lunches, they found a table in the breakroom to sit at together. “I’m really enjoying my first day, I love working with the customers, and working at the register, scanning the items is fun,” said Bloom.

After the lunch break, the employees continued to work the register. At 3:55 P.M. Bloom and Owens headed for the break room to clock out for the day. Owens exclaimed she was “glad to get to know Bloom.” As they walked out to their cars, Bloom said to Owens, “I’ll see ya tomorrow!”

Quarantine during the pandemic can be harsh to the mind and body, but the one-stop-shop, Target Corporation, is here to help! Here are five tips, along with the corresponding products and merchandise,  that will help you stay sane during the quarantine.

  1. Exercise:

Keeping yourself physically intact is crucial to your health. One way you can do this is by exercising. Target has almost everything you could imagine to create your own home gym. From jump ropes to inversion tables, Target has supplied its customers with accessible exercising equipment for reasonable prices.

  1. Cooking

Learning or expanding your knowledge of cooking is a great way to keep your mind churning while eating good food at the same time. In 2003 Target expanded its brand to selling groceries. Target sells groceries such as fruits, vegetables, bakery items, meat, and dairy products. Along with groceries, in order to cook, you need supplies, at Target we have everything you may need when it comes to cooking like pots, pans, utensils, and even cookbooks.

  1. Technology

In today’s society, technology has been continuously succeeding. This is a great way to keep yourself occupied during the quarantine. Target has a variety of technology such as cameras, computers, tablets, or more specifically, Nintendo switches, Xbox, PlayStation, and Virtual reality. Using these types of technology is a gateway to speak with friends when you can’t see them in person and could also make some fun family or friend game nights!

  1. New Hobbies

Taking up new hobbies is a great way to expand your knowledge about different arts or cultures. From painting to collecting baseball cards, Target has merchandise that will help you develop new skills and knowledge to keep you feeling normal during the quarantine.

  1. Change Your Scenery

Instead of staring at the same walls and decorations every day, change up your scenery. Target has partnered with Magnolia and Threshold to inspire new looks for homes everywhere. A slight or big change in a room such as a throw pillow or a new chair can make all the difference.

How to Write a Blog

Kaitlyn Estopare

March 4, 2021

LISLE, IL

In order to write a blog, you have to find something that you are truly passionate about such as your job, fitness, or food to name a few. Along with your passions, you must target your reader’s passions a well. For your blog to be successful, engaging with your audience is key.

Get to know your topic. It is great to have knowledge about what you are talking about so that your readers are able to understand and gain knowledge from what you have studied and researched. Being engaged with your readers emotionally is another way to be successful in your writing.

Another key factor is to inspire your readers. For example, if you are talking about food or cooking, you can inspire your readers by giving fun recipe ideas. Along with this negativity is okay, such as certain foods to avoid.

Take charge of your writing. Open with a strong lead that will entice your reader to what to know more. With this, you still need to write naturally so that your writing does not seem robotic or mimicked. Start strong, continue strong throughout your blog and take it away with a strong conclusion to summarize your blog and research.

Lastly, being organized in your writing is an important part of writing and success. If your writing becomes confusing by being disorganized you may lose readers.

Creating a blog is fun and easy to do! Get passionate about something and share that passion with others. That passion and perseverance could spark you or your readers to do something great.

Get to Know Brian Cornell

Today an interview was conducted with Brian Cornell who has played the role of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Target Corporation since 2014. Cornell is responsible for Target’s global businesses along with digital properties. With his 30 years of experience at top retail and global consumer product companies, he is a great contributor to Target’s raging success.

“With my 30 years of experience in various different locations such as North America, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, I have developed skills for vending and competition, ” said Cornell.

Before Target, Cornell previously worked for The Home Depot and Polaris Industries and currently is a non-executive chairman of the board of directors for Yum! Brands and the Immediate Past Chairman of the Retail Industry Leaders Association or RILA. In addition, before Target, he was a vendor partner and a competitor to Target.

“Because a company I previously worked for was a competitor of Target, I was able to gain insight about the company and identify their strengths and weaknesses which allowed me to get an outsider view to help improve their company from the business standpoint,” said Cornell.

Aside from the business industry, Cornell is a board member for Catalyst and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“My education is what prepared me for my great success. I attended UCLA in 1981 where I earned my bachelor's degree at the schools Anderson School of Management.

With Cornell’s shocking and innovative style of management, Target was able to please and surprise not only their shoppers but also competing stores and the stock market. Cornell was the driving person to create new digital shopping options like curbside, in-store pickup, and personal shopping, which increased their sales during the pandemic.
